An air conditioner works by drawing the hot air of the room and blowing in the cold air inside the room. This contains an evaporator coil that contains a substance called refrigerant. It is the refrigerant that cools the hot air. The evaporator coil, in turn, is connected to an outside coil called condenser. A compressor controls the flow of refrigerant between the two coils and controls its pressure too. A motor offers all the energy to run the compressor.
